Post subject: | Which Underwater Camera? |
I'm in the market for a Digital underwater camera. I dont know what to look for when making a purchase, so I'm after some recommendations. I'd like to spend as little as possible, as I already have a good Digital camera. Thanks in advance, Shorerider. |

Yes, I have thought of that option. I might look into it and see if they are still available, as my camera is a few years old. Cheers, Shorerider. |

I have a Kodak Easyshare V570 which is a fantastic camera for out of the water. http://www.livingroom.org.au/photolog/r ... e_v570.php I absolutely love the size and memory options etc, but I can't find a housing anywhere for underwater. I will be buying a new one soon, I would love to be able to take some underwater pics of my trips. |

shorerider, be careful with those cameras. unless you have had a good look at one first, i would suggest holding off till you can. a mate brought a similar deal and the quality of the camera was rat-shit. |

I had a look at some reviews on that camera and it sounds ok. But it was on a forum. There is always the risk of someone getting onto forums and advertising their own product, its called guerilla marketing and I do it myself You need to be very careful looking at forum reviews. Badger, what do you suggest is a good camera for about 500 bucks. I want decent video and good photo quality. Obviously I am not going to get a really good camera for that price, but I would love something that takes decent photos and is rugged. I would be taking it out basically every weekend so something durable is good as well. I have been investigating for a couple of weeks and have a few ideas but would love some input from anyone who has a camera they would recommend or something. Cheers, Tom |

I have also been looking at the Olympus line of cameras. Their Water proof range in particular: http://www.olympus.com.au/component/opt ... Itemid,69/ I'd still use one of their waterproof housings, but in the unfortunate event that the housing leaked, the camera would be fine. However this option could be co$tly. Badger you're right. I'm sceptical to buy something like a camera off ebay. You'd be sure to have trouble claiming warranty, especially being for use underwater. Cheers, Shorerider. |

Mother in law bought one like that off ebay, absolute s#@t! 12mp supposedly but crap quality, they word it so it sounds good but if you knew your s#@t technically you could probably tell it was crap. Couldn't even find out how to change the shutter speed as the manual was more of a waver than an instruction booklet! Save your pennies or go the Olympus, you can always upgrade it if you want better video quality later on. Check out Spook's pics and vids, all with an Olympus! |

I have seen those "12MP" cameras. If you read the fine print, it'll say something like 12,0 MegaPixels (interpolated). Whatever that means. The Olympus does looks like the best option. Does Spook have the waterproof version, and does he use the housing? Cheers, Shorerider. |

Spook does use a housing, its the smarter option as you will find that you will use the camera at depths of greater then 10m. In addition, it's an extra barrier between the camera and the salt water which is very corrosive. You can spend as much money on the camera as you want but be careful with your housing $100's of dollars down the gurgler if you do not clean and regrease the seal/o-ring after every dive from sand and grit. I've got an el-cheapo off ebay and it treats me good. The only gripe I have about it, is that the cameras flash is covered by the housing so I can't take descent photos under ledges. |

I finally brought the housing for my Canon Powershot G9 yesterday. Should be here in a week or two, tis a lot of money to justify. The housing costs more than the bloody camera! |
