As some people may have seen on the news or various news websites, a diver was shot with a speargun today at Cape Schanck. The incident actually occurred whilst the diver was competing in club competition.

I am not going to go into the details of how the incident occurred on here but i will say it was a one in a million accident. The club will be holding a club meeting, for members only, on Tuesday night at 8pm. At which we will address how the incident occured and what we will be doing to ensure this sort of thing will never happen again, i encourage all members to come along. (I will confirm a venue tomorrow)

I would like to thank all parties involved on their great work today. Within 5-10 minutes of the accident everyone was out of the water, ambulance officers were treating the diver and a chopper was on it's way.

I have since had a phone call saying that Brett (not Illingworth) is doing well, and the spear missed all major organs. We all hope he makes a speedy recovery and is back in the water in no time.

And a reminder for anyone that was at the comp and wants to talk about the events, please call me.

(I'm going to lock this thread and don't want to see any new one's popping up about the issue. If you want to discuss it come to the meeting on Tuesday.)

I have just had a phone call with some great news, the spear was removed successfully last night and Brett is doing fine. He has a punctured lung, but is out of intensive care. He should make a full recovery.

Again thanks to everyone for their fantastic work yesterday.

So how did the incident occur? Not looking for details on who was involved, just maybe something that the rest of us could learn from to prevent it happening to us.
