The seastar? They're just not pretty enough... Cracked me up reading the douche trying to justify the grouper should be protected because they 're pretty, but dolphins are mean and nasty so shouldn't have any protection at all. That’s just a stupid discriminative attitude. Protect what needs to be protected, not what's just appealing to the eye. Grouper in this case don't need protecting, their numbers are already increasing, as determined by 'proven scientific research methods'

South now that I've written what I'm hoping passes for a submission where the hell do I send it. I couldn't find an email address on Cell's link.

Ligure you will help our argument better if you stick to the topic. rants about crays, scallops and being allowed to spear on scuba are not relevant no matter how much you would like to tie them all together.
Jaws go back and reread that thread, the person you mention was taking the piss and on our side.

Maddogspearfishing club received a Document titled proposed measures to protect the Blue Groper in Vic waters 2 days a go and this was our reply!

BLUE GROPER

Maddogspearfishing club has received 2 days ago from the Department of Primary industries a document relating to the proposed measures to protect the Blue Groper in Victorian Waters for 12 months, pending development of a longer term arrangement.

Currently there is a limit of 5 per person and legal min size is 23cm.
In this document it is stated that quote that "large blue males are particularly vulnerable to spearfishing" Fact not in victorian waters they aren't and little if any spearos have ever seen one in victorian waters.
Quote "It appears likely that the number of blue groper in victorian waters will increase due to the changing ocean temperatures and currents, and if so these fish may become vulnerable, particularly to recreational spearing.
Factthere is no evidence to suggest that the blue gropers numbers will increase to changing ocean temps and currents.Fact blue gropers are not classified by spearos as a good eating fish, they are more of a ornamental fish. Therefore they are not a preferred eating fish.

The facts are as follows
50's till approx the 60's they were targeted by fisherman and some spearos.
There is no evidence to suggested currently that eastern/western Blue Gropers have been targeted in victorian waters by spearfisherman
Very few Eastern or western Blue Gropers have been sighted or speared in victorian waters.
A few junenile gropers have been sighted at Wilsons Prom.

Maddogspearfishing Club has voted last night on blocking this proposed measure/s!
In my opinion these proposed measures are inconsequential and based on insufficient evidence

We listed it on our online forum under breaking news!

Coalition protects blue groper from fishing
Sun 17 April 2011

Divers will have a better chance of spotting the friendly blue groper in Victorian waters thanks to new rules to protect the fish.

Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Peter Walsh said the Coalition Government had moved quickly to protect the species after the fish was noticed in Port Phillip Bay.

“Blue groper was reportedly common in east Gippsland in the 1960s and 1970s but numbers were drastically reduced by fishing,” Mr Walsh said.

“The species was recently spotted by divers in Port Phillip Bay, indicating that numbers are beginning to recover.

“The Coalition has acted quickly to protect the fish by introducing regulations to prevent the take of eastern and western blue groper in Victorian waters.”

Mr Walsh said the blue groper was a great attraction for recreational SCUBA divers and snorkellers and increased numbers would be a boost eco-tourism and the local dive industry.

“The large blue males are friendly and inquisitive fish, making them particularly vulnerable to spear-fishing,” Mr Walsh said.

“The no-catch limit we have put in place will provide immediate protection for blue groper for 12 months from April 2011, pending development of a longer term arrangement.

“Our initial enquiries indicate that most recreational and commercial fishers do not target blue groper, with the exception of some recreational spear-fishers who occasionally take the fish.

“Blue gropers are also afforded a high level of protection from fishing in New South Wales and South Australia.”

Mr Walsh said Fisheries Victoria would develop educational material to help Victorian fishers identify blue groper.

“We are delivering a wide range of other mitigations to boost opportunities for recreational fishers across Victoria, including the construction of new fishing reefs and fish cleaning tables,” Mr Walsh said.

“We are also stocking record numbers of fish in waterways refilling after the drought.”

the fucking propaganda continues. this proposal got through on blatant lies and its just fucked. They took submissions on this shit but their mind was already made up.

fuck this bullshit. We ALL know Western Blue Groper have always been in PPB. We ALL know that in 20+ years from now no large Western Blue Groper will be seen in Victoria.

All this does is makes Fisheries Victoria look like complete fools. This decision will NEVER be forgotten by the spearfishing community around Australia. It is embarrassing that an organisation in charge of overseeing the well being of our southern ocean could be so blatantly fucking stupid.

I encourage all Victorian Spearos to voice their disgust over this decision. For a start, every fisheries officer that checks my catch is going to hear all about it.

Thank you for your efforts South, much appreciated but from what I hear the dice was loaded from the start and nobody's best would have been good enough to stop this shit.
What's next.

Been waiting for that to come up! Nothing against the csiro but it's not worth the risk! We can have the same data put into the same format with zero risk for a little coin! Money is not worth risking the future of our sport!
