I shot my first one back in the 80's. I've seen a lot more than I've shot because I don't reckon they are that great. I don't think I see any more now than I did back then.

Makes the fucken blood Boil!

One spot in particular has produced quite a few for me in the past, if the swell drops I'll hit it next week for that sole purpose! Might be hitting up the bay in the ducky over the weekend so I'll make a point of stopping in at Popes for a look too!

I've only got a couple and they aren't any help but I'm pretty sure I can get hold of the old Bulldog records.

OZdog, Paul has a stash of them. I got onto him.
Greg, if you can get hold of some scoresheets that Paul doesn't have, they would be very handy! Where are they?

The new State record western blue groper was taken today!
And another one just under the old record nearly took the bearded burbler!
Fotos soon...

Any more taken? Don't worry about any more from around the back beaches, but would like some further east or west.

How is it that your fish looks bigger than mine? Bloody impressed you managed to get a garage door in the photo.
Mine was 3.3kg, Brett's 2.3kg.

It's not a proper fish photo without a garage door. Mine looks bigger because it is lined up next to my dainty frame.

On the website the old record was 2.5kg.

How does Brett get the fish he does?
He turned up at the boat ramp 2 hours late after a near all night bender, unable to open 1 eye.
Second dive of the day his weigh belt finally said "fuck it, I can't stretch any more" and dropped to the bottom where it stayed. The left three bloke- 2 weight belts!
At the next spot I got my groper and a few sweep for dinner and offered Brett my weight belt so he could get a feed. He jumped in with his hand spear, and 1 eye still half closed. Yelled "kingfish" within 30 seconds. No one got a shot away because the fish swam right between Sean and Brett. Not long after, Brett surfaced babbling something about loosing a groper, and not long after that he surfaced with a groper in his hands babbling something about loosing a kingfish and his hand spear! Turns out, he found the groper he'd dropped earlier on the bottom, grabbed it, then the small kings came in, he shot one and had to decide to wither let go of the groper, the handspear with kingy attached, or drown. In the name of science he let go of the handspear. Groper boated, the boys found the handspear but no king attached.
By the time we got back tot he boat ramp, Brett could open both eyes... just!

I was wrong, it happens sometimes.
Back in the good ol' days when I and others shot these in comps (Kennett and Qcliff in particular) they went on the score sheet as southern groper as they still do. The score sheet is wrong or common names suck- take your pick or you can choose both.
Until recently I thought southerns were a separate species but I was corrected by Shadow who told me the ones we got were viridis. After looking at a few pics and some further reading I am now reasonably certain that the ones I and others I've seen in the past are gouldii.
