hmmm i dunno about leaving the guts in  I still cooked it in it shell, just cut the guts out. He keeps all the juices and makes the sauce at the end with it, i dont think anyone would fancy stewed guts in there? But yeah he doesnt mention anything about it, i personally just didnt want them and assumed he removed the guts. Mine turned out great so ill keep removing the guts i reckon when i make it.

hrmmm.... not bad. Not bad at all.

Didnt have any mirin, so used less soy.
Had two abs from a weekend outing. Could have taken the smaller one out of the pan a bit earlier (its flesh was a tiny little bit tough) but over all, pretty good! Still somehow managed to get ab guts all over me though :)

yeah no idea. I had it on a really low burner, maybe too low, and the heat didnt make it up into the shell?
I also cooked em straight out of the fridge, maybe should have let them come to room temp first?

Regardless, it still worked out quite well

That abalone was dead, look up dancing abalone. They put them on their shells so the poor things can't walk away while they cook them alive on a little grill.

Are there other ways one might kill an abalone before cooking it?

You still got a month worth of abalone open days! Including Easter! whats this about "next season" :P

Even if you do miss the end of the season, you can always take a drive down past the "central zone" waters and collect any time! Hooray!
I don't like abs that much to go out specifically to collect, but if i happen to be past cape otway, and in the water, and see them, and they're the right size, and i have my ab tools on me... well, fair game :)
