Post subject:  Do we get rock blackfish in VIC?

I went for a look around altona yesterday and came across some fish that looked a bit like the rock blackfish I shot up in Eden.
They only seemed to be in the rocky parts without weed.
Biggest ones were about 20cm long.
Dark silver/black color.
Laterally compressed and quite thick.

Can anyone suggest what it might be?

Thanks, Rich.

Girella elevata has been recorded all the way around to Shelly Beach in Vic, as well as northern tassie.

But your fish may have been Victorian Parma (Parma victoriae) ?

I was about to say it could have been a scalyfin, which Shadow has said already. They are black or yellowish looking, with often very thin blue lines on them.

Thanks Paul but after checking the link provided I think it was a scaly fin.
I didn't notice the lighter stripes under the mouth when I saw it but it did look alot more like a scaly fin than the rock blackfish.

Cheers, Rich.
