My wife caught this fish at cunnningham pier in geelong today. At first glance when she was reeling it in I thought it was a small flatty. Anyone seen this fish before or know what its called? It has a wierd sucker shaped fin underneath.

It's a goby of some sort. You can tell by the fused pecs. |

it seems the best matching description is the goby so far. Mainly because it talks about the fused sucker shape pelvic fins. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goby |

Looks like Acanthogobius flavimanus. Introduced species, very common around Geelong. |

Its common name is 'Yellowfin Goby" (Family Gobiidae). So no, not a flathead, which belong to the Platycephalidae and, with a few exceptions, to the genus Platycephalus. Scientific names are the organisms "correct" name and often refer to some particular portion of the anatomy which makes the species distinct from its relatives. They are usually Greek or Latin, or derived from place names, the name of the discoverer etc. The capitalised genus (eg Acanthogobius) refers to the spines (Acantho) these type of Gobies (hence gobius) posses. The lower case species name (eg flavimanus) refers to the yellow colouring on the fins. So flavi meaning yellow, and manus refering to the distal appendage aka fins or "hands". |
