A little while ago I went for a dive in Diamond bay and saw 2 quite large fish that I could not identify, hence I didn't shoot them. They looked a LOT like whiting but had bigger sort of blotchy/squarish black marks on them. Can anyone confirm this was a Trumpeter Whiting? My fish guide does not show them as existing so far south but then I suspect it is not entirely accurate. |

What's depth got to do with whether they are whiting or not? I've got them in 50 cm of water and in 15m |

I don't believe we get trumpeter whiting this far south, i know we get sand whiting but they aren't that large. |

IH, this is the FISH IDENTIFICATION part of the forum, so if you don't 'give a fuck' go 'give a fuck' on a different part of the forum. MUST have been a larger one of the whitings mentioned (if sand, its the first one I saw that was bigger than about 25cm) Its blotches were quite dark and it was pretty large and solitary. Case closed. |

In VIC you get the following whiting species: Sillaginodes punctata, King George Whiting. Sillago bassensis Cuvier, Southern School Whiting. Sillago flindersi McKay, Eastern School Whiting. Trumpeter Whiting, aka S. maculata are only found in QLD and NSW. |

Are any of those what we call "Grass whiting" here? |

No. Grass "whiting" belong to the Odacidae family. Which includes the Herring and Rainbow Cales. |
