came across these at stleonards, they were probably just over legal size for flathead. I havn't seen any flatty's with this kind of marking before so just wondering if they're just the plain ol bluespots or what..? did not bag one so couldn't have a better look

They are rock flathead. Rock flatties change color with age and also can change color to suit their environment. Big fuckers go a lot darker. |

They are Grass Flathead. Or rock flathead if you prefer. Some people call them sand flathead too. Or mud flathead.  Or we can use the real name Platycephalus laevigatus. Amazing what you find while looking for a pic.. http://www.fishbase.org/summary/Species ... p?id=52356

Lol, how original. "Black Flathead". Seems most people keep it simple here and class the flatties commonly speared as "Rock" & "Sand". |

Two years ago I was doing fisheries research I interviewed a lino who had caught Eastern Bluespot, Tiger, Dusky and Marbled Flatheads. He looked over my shoulder as I wrote down the names and corrected me "mate, theyre all SAND flathead". When I asked how he came to that conclusion his answer was "I caught them all on sand".

lol we got one with thoes markings while line fishing on the weekend and we dident thing any thing of it we ate him as he was big  tasty stephen |

When I shot this I thought it was a flathead. But when I took a closer look I noticed the whiskers/barbels around the mouth, which I didn't think flatheads had. Is it a flathead?

terrible looking meat.............. i remember puss spearing one at Eden and the flesh was bright yellow and the feedback was quiet positive. Back to the flathead, who care what specie it is, how unrated are they? they taste delicious and are the forgotten solider by many! |
