Hey all, I went for a leisurely bay flathead dive today and shot several KGW and had the only flatty I saw rip me off! When I got back to the car, about to put them into the esky, I noticed that most of the fins and especially the tail (caudal fin) of one of them was completely deteriorated with the caudal peduncle being slightly red and inflamed. This gave good argument as to why two out of the three were relatively easy to shoot? Also they were only small skinny fish; 28.5cm and 1@30cm. Has anyone shot or caught any with similar symptoms? They will make good snapper baits!

Being here should hopefully get Shadow's attention moreso. Sounds like possibly malnutrition, disease or maybe end of lifespan?

At that size I doubt it would be the natural end of their life. The worst cases of fin rot I have seen in aquariums has been when nitrate levels have been high. When ever you see it in tanks you know that water changes haven't been done properly or there has been serious overfeeding and the tank is polluted with uneaten food.
Was it somewhere near Werribee?

Any marks on the flesh or just fins? Shot a Jew once that looked like it had reversed into a mower! Consensus was it had most likely been smashed by other Jews! Got a pic?

Yeah I'd go with damage from other predators OR possibly Netters??

I have seen some strange things, including those that have recovered from predators, returned by-catch, cookie cutter sharks, etc however, here is a pic...

It is contagious to fish but I've never seen a person with fin rot.

This is what shits me about this planet. We live in a modern age, but our mexican cousins are still to poor to afford fins for diving. :(

I'll have a whip around the Sydney clubs and see if we can send a care package down to you poor people...
