visiting family in nsw in moruya at congo point atm, saw this red and black fish today and thought it might be related to the grouper havent pinned it down to anything, was with its little kids under a rock (looked big enough) and thought maybe you'd be able to spear this species- what is this fish? black and red stripes i think decent size

also these are common, still new to all this its a black fish maybe white spots, saw someone spear one the other day, you generally see them straight away when you enter the reef hanging around the rocks- what is this fish, pretty much black all round sometimes a few spots, thanks guys
also speared a stingray by accident thinking it was a flathead, oops-
and stung by a blue bottle today, geez

The second sound like black drummer, great eating, just don't confuse them with the silvers.

Agreed, don't post that on a public forum. It was a mistake, fine, no need to tell the world...

USFA, who is the spearfishing representative body for nsw, put out a fantastic guide to spearfishing in nsw a couple of years ago. I highly recommend that you send them an email and try and get your hands on a copy. Spearing stingrays isn't illegal but looks very negative for the sport so although nas doesn't have any tact I tend to agree with his comments. Also look out for A fish Id book it's called something like 'fishes of southern Australia' it has all the fish likely to be encountered in Vic, nsw, SA, tas and southern wa.

It's "Sea Fishes of Southern Australia", by Barry Hutchins & Roger Swainston.

Got myself a copy for Christmas; already own a number of fish-id books from when I was a kid using a rod & line, but this book is light-years better than any of them. That may be why it's recommended by Fisheries (and I'm not aware of any other books that can claim that).

Two thumbs up - and check out the non-fish id parts of it too; lots of good practical info on safety, where the spines/spurs/bitey/dangerous bits on different species are, how to treat any stings/wounds sustained while capturing fish, etc, etc.

You can pick it up at Dymocks for ~$30, and any fishing shop worth it's salt ought to have a copy or two in stock.

Cheers.
