Ive never heard of John dory in the bay but I saw a fish in about 5-6m of water at black rock that looked like one. Wasn't close enough to ID it and it vanished soon after. Could it have been a black spotted boar fish (or even a similar patterned LJ) if not a John dory?

sometimes the bay can suprise you. silver dory have been speared in ppb before and i've seen a small jackass morwong. Suppose it could have been either of those.

Not sure what you mean by 'black spotted boarfish' but there is certainly healthy populations of long-snout boarfish in ppb and to a lesser extent, giant boarfish.

I thought I saw a John dory the other day on the back beaches, but wasn't confident enough in it to tell anyone. Have speared them in NZ, and they have a pretty characteristic swimming motion.

Not unusual to see small dory in the bay. P diddy even presented one to the weigh in at a comp in mornington. I have a photo somewhere and will try to dig it up.

Very interesting. That pic would be good if you can find it Brett.

I didn't see it swimming but had a glance over once I got in the water, it was sitting still on top of a ledge facing away from me, I went to load and when I looked up, it was gone. I do remember it had a distinctive brown and white blotchy side and could've been a large dorsal fin if my eyes are not deceiving me (that's where I'm thinking dory/boar) and definitly wouldn't have been over 30cm...

I'll throw deep bodied LJ into the mix, quite a few around ATM.

Possibly Hutchins boarfish also called short boarfish. Positively I'd a pair at mt Martha a few years ago and never seen again. Did you notice a prominent lump on head above eyes?

I know a bloke wot knows a bloke (you know this bloke too) wot reckons that it was definitely a john dory.

He says he caught dory around Black Rock way back when it was possible to catch dory around Black Rock cos they were there and you could catch em.

He said that.

He did.

Hi fellas, long time reader, first time poster. I used to spearfish a bit in Vic until I moved to Canberra 5 years ago, now I live vicariously through you guys while spearing the occasional drummer and luderick at Bateman's Bay. I miss chasing southern crays a lot.

Anyway, the reason for my maiden post is that I caught a silver dory on a soft plastic while fishing from my kayak off Black Rock in 2006.

Here is a photo:

That's awesome! It must've been one of them, I can't be sure that it had a spot on its side but it had a blotchy pattern like that.

Thanks for the pic :D
