Hey guys

Just researching some fish, and thought I would post this info to help some of the newbies like myself in shooting the right fish, of the right size and their catch limits. Info from DPI.


Common Name/s: Australian salmon
Scientific Name: Arripis spp.
Minimum legal size: 21cm
Bag/possession limit: a total limit of 20 Australian salmon and/or Australian herring


Common Name/s: Boarfish (all species)
Scientific Name: Pentacerotidae
Minimum legal size: no minimum
Bag/possession limit: 1

Common Name/s: Bream
Scientific Name: Acanthopagrus spp.
Minimum legal size: 28cm
Bag/possession limit: 10
Landed whole or as a carcass

Common Name/s: Flathead
Scientific Name: Platycephalidae
Minimum legal size: 27cm
Bag/possession limit: 20

Common Name/s: Flounder
Minimum legal size: 23cm
Bag/possession limit: 20

Common Name/s: Garfish
Scientific Name: Hemiramphidae
Minimum legal size: no minimum
Bag/possession limit: 40

Common Name/s: Leatherjacket (all species)
Scientific Name: Monacanthidae
Minimum legal size: no minimum
Bag/possession limit: 20

Common Name/s: Ling

Common Name/s: Longfin pike and snook

Minimum legal size: 23cm
Bag/possession limit: 10

Common Name/s: Morwong
Scientific Name: Cheilodactylidae
Minimum legal size: 23cm
Bag/possession limit: 5

Common Name/s: Mullet (all species)
Scientific Name: Mugilidae
Minimum legal size: no minimum
Bag/possession limit: 40

Common Name/s: Rock Lobster
Scientific Name: Jasus spp.
Minimum legal size: Male - 11cm carapace length.
Female - 10.5cm carapace length.
Bag limit: 2
Possesion limit: (in, on or next to Victorian waters): 4
Closed season: Male - 15 Sep to 15 Nov inclusive.
Female - 1 June to 15 Nov inclusive.
When taking rock lobster, you must not take or possess female rock lobster with eggs, or remove the eggs. You must not take soft-shelled rock lobster.

Scientific Name: Pseudocaranx spp.
Minimum legal size: 20cm
Bag/possession limit: 20

Common Name/s: Snapper
Scientific Name: Pagrus auratus
Minimum legal size: 28cm
Bag/possession limit: 10 (of which no more than 3 fish may be equal to or exceed 40cm in length). Landed whole or as a carcass


Common Name/s: Sweep
Scientific Name: Scorpidadae
Minimum legal size: 23cm

Common Name/s: Tailor (skipjack)
Scientific Name: Pomatomus saltatrix

Common Name/s: Wrasse (parrot fish) (all species except bluethroat wrasse)

They also have the Vic fishing guide on google play (for those of us that don't own the communist fruit brand phone)

If you are a hunter, ther is also the Vic hunting regulations guide as well
