No spots that I recall, the black stripe was unmistakable tho!

hmmm ... still curious about this fish, which is giving me the opportunity to learn more about other fish ... after checking a few references I would guess a wrasse of some description similar to a comb or pixie; if not a type of goby ??
Keep me posted for the fun of it.
Thanks

Yeah it'll be a wrasse of some sort, not a goby. Time for a search!

Nah man I've been through the museum pics of wrasse. Kinda like a cross between a goatie and an elegant with round fins including dorsal but goatie colors with the staggered stripe which was about 10mm wide?

Going to MS Paint, wish me luck!

Rainbow Cale!

Haha, knew you'd pull through. Took your sweet ass time but thanks heaps.

Are they common? Was a decent size and I reckon I've seen 'em before but not often.

Taste like cale? Crap?

I've caught a few Rainbow Cale line fishing in flinders. They're like bluethroat wrasse, grass whiting, soft textured flesh, not much taste. If you cook it put good amount of salt or vegeta.

Well Rhino
My reference (Sea Fishes of Australia by Rudie H. Kuiter) states they are common in the southern waters of Australia and can grow up to 30cm in length
I however found that the max lengths for certain fish stated in this book are quite conservative as I have seen and caught species that were bigger than reported.
