You didnt shoot the bugs did you?
Grab them by hand so you can boil them up without loosing half the meat.

Well technically they were not shot, more leaned against with a pointy spear! The meat seems to be only in the tail except for a fine slither around the rim of the carapace so the poke in the head didn't seem to affect them, they were great. Cheers

Don't have a problem with them being speared, but I imagined they wouldn't be hard to catch by hand. What depth were you in?

One was in about 4 metres on a sandy bottom just next to some structure, the other was in about 1 metre on that structure. The one in the deeper water was speared as it lay on the bottom in the open, the one in the shallow was caught by hand as it glided away from me. I think i knocked it with my knee and it started to move off but not very fast. I have caught a few before at the same place and usually if they are disturbed they hoon off like a rocket but only for short bursts and take a fair effort to chase down. Anyway as soon as i caught him by hand i just popped him on the spear for safe keeping. It was a night dive.

Push it away with the pointy end! We had one up at the surface last week trying to take our catch.

ive had a few come over to me while im burleying and i just give em a poke and they swim away, they're generally pretty quiet. I had one get aggressive down at aires inlet though, was swimming along with burley and he was resting on the bottom and came up with tail flaring.

Some of 'em nick off as soon as you dive on them but the persistant ones don't give a s#@t. I try the old pokey pokey a few times but if they only shoot off a few meters then it means they are there to stay so I go the pointy end near the eye which they seem to wanna protect, they tend to give up if your as persistant. Not in the eye though, just a tap on the side of the socket. Try to get 'em before they get a taste for the berley though as once they are into it they don't wanna give it up!

i propose the club passes a new rule regarding the vic challenge,

brett illingworth, must, only wear one fin, half a wetsuit, have one hand tied behind his back at all times, use a gun no larger than 25cm, make lots of noise while diving.

either that, or rename the vic challenge to 'bretts challenge'.

well done mate, top fish! i imagine your whiting will be mistaken for a snook as well.....

Didn't he agree to use a handspear a couple of years ago?

Bloody hell, I got a 2.2kg Snook and thought it was OK, now I'm wondering about my 1.8kg flattie. Usually a 10 pointer but not if Brett has anything to do with it!!
