Surely you lie, unless they are different down there? Or your Polish............

Gotta be a mutated Zeb Trent, you know how it is in Tassie. Keep it in the family and all.

This is one I've been pondering for a while.

Image

^ Butterfish, Odax pullus. NZ only fish. Darts around in the weed, herbivore. Absolutely delicious, a bit mushy if overcooked.

Image

^ Herring Cale, Odax cyanomelas. Australia only fish. Same weedeating habits. Terrible taste?

Has anyone on here actually tried to eat one?

I've been eyeing these guys off (herring cale) for a while. Every ocean dive I do where there's kelp, they're everywhere! Havent shot one...

There seems to be mixed reports about their table quality though... mind you, I shot an eastern kelpfish once and thought that that didnt cook up too badly....

I should really qualify that statement a bit more.... crumbed and fried with a lot of herbs in the breadcrumbs and the kelpfish came out .... eatable. Bland, but certainly not horrid. Wouldn't shoot one again, but eating it certainly wasn't the worst experience of my life.
