Hey guys,
My best mate just got his P's and were both really really keen on getting into spearfishing. We had a couple of dives in January around Phillip island (Cat Bay and Pyramid Rock). Shot a few ok sized flattys but thats about it. We went for a dive at Queenscliff earlier this week, was told its a good spot for spearing calamari. Got a couple of leatherjackets. We didnt see a single squid, not sure whether thats because they werent there or because we didnt know what to look for. have you guys got any advice/locations for spearing squid for begginers?

Pics: Where we went.

You're looking in the right spot mate, keep trying, the squid will be there soon enough. Make sure you know where the point lonsdale marine park is though.

Queenscliff is great for a wide variety of species & very enjoyable dive but be aware of the currents, aim for slack water or just stay in close to shore until your used to it. Careful of the boats, fisho's go a bit crazy for the squid and snapper from now onwards. A float with a big flag is a must. If don't have it don't dive there until you do!

Would be a good idea to understand the tides around that area too.

That's a good link South, you should get Kurt or whoever to put it on the links page.
I'd never made the connection before about high and low at Willi being slack but thinking about it it makes sense.
