Can get decent diving in the south island, depending where you go water is fairly cold and vis can be pretty average (often much worse). Don't forget the HTFU pills. A bit different to the north island species wise. Mid-south island the main species are butterfish, moki and blue cod, northern tip of the south island sees a few warmer water species like kingis over summer. Good crays and paua (abs) to be found though. I'd check up on the gun situation well before you go, I strongly doubt you could get a NZ firearms license from over here.

Sounds expensive? why not travel with your own guns, its not that big of a deal. Bit of paperwork and organisation. All you need to shoot in NZ is the visitors firearms license (If you currently hold an firearms license) and I also believe you can shoot under direct supervision of someone who does hold a NZ firearms license.

This link might help. http://www.police.govt.nz/service/firearms/

I'm pretty keen on doing a big hunting/diving trip there myself so have been reading up a bit on it..

Your welcome to come along, the reason for buying guns is easy lience i can get semi autos in shoty and 308. Makes sense and cheaper then here.

No it really doesn't. By law you have to apply in person, and the sarge will come over to your house and check out your safe. These steps (and more) are going to be a bit of a problem for you. Surf is on the money - you want a visitor ticket

Not sure, it'd be easier for your mates to buy them for you I'd say
