My wife is about to deport me to the Alice Springs region (as if a vacation far from the sea could be fun); among the doom and gloom, it dawned on me that, just possibly, some fresh water diving is possible there: has anyone been there and can give me hints ?

I know, I know, rather a long shot.

Shoot your wife.
In 1974, during the biggest recorded floods, I was on a school trip to the centre. Ayers Rock had waterfalls cascading the rain was so heavy. The top of the rock has many depressions. These were full of water, forming rock pools. I climbed down and grabbed my mask snorkel and fins. ( even then they were the first items packed), Back up the side and spent some time snorkelling in the little pools. My mate took photos od me in the water, with our campsite visible in the distance. Probably the first and only to do it. Take your gear everywhere. You just never know.
