Had a thought on the soft shell. Perhaps they can not be measure accurately due to distortion in the animal when grappling with a 10.5cm female.

mating takes place just after the female has moulted and is still soft. This is the same for most crustacea.

Roughly how long do you guys reckon u need to be able to stay down to pull them out comfortably? I have only tried once n about 5m of water and 1. I wasn't able t look in to many places and 2. I was knackered from the constant diving down.

Pulled plenty in 30-40 sec. If your struggling find good ground in 3-4m water. Take your time picking likely spots and rest longer on the surface between dives. Being relaxed is paramount. You'd be surprised how big a cray you'll find in shallow water. A bit of fitness helps but not essential, practice is the best.

Thanks Blacky! I've heard that some areas are great within 3 m depth once you get your eye in and work out which rocks are more likely to hold them u can bag fairly quick. Would it be fair to say that shallower water the rocks wouldn't be as under swept as deeper (on average)and easier to reach them? I know when on bubbles most of the places they have an easy getaway back where u cannot reach.

All this cray talk is killin me!

I've never even seen one, but I'v only been diving for approx. 8 months.

So best places to look are like ledges, in between rocks and caves?

Getting myself a torch this week
