Post subject:  Cray season

Took the tinny to Apollo Bay Friday morning for the first time. Looked promising with the swell only a couple of feet. Unfortunately the vis was terrible. (I think because of the rain we had a couple of weeks ago?). Spent a lot of time searching for better vis. Only ended with 1 legal size cray about 1.5kg. Seen a lot of small ones. Had first encouter with a seal. Little scary with 2metre vis. Diving out of a boat sure beats rock hopping.

Forgot to mention near death experience. We were about to leave the boat ramp and my mate was opening the door of his car and a golf ball just missed him and put a big dint in his car. We ran up onto the fairway and got into a bit of an argument with the guy who had hit. We managed to convince him it was his fault. He has said he will pay for repairs but we will see.

Have spent a few days down the west coast (Peterborough) over the last week. Have got a few crays. No big ones around. None caught over 1 kg. Saw first pinky of the season, not big either.

Can I just remind people if you dive west of Cape Otway, please decontaminate you and you gear to stop the spread of the abalone virus. Details on how to do that are on this forum somewhere. Basically soak you gear in bleach, disinfectant and fresh water over night including catch bags.

Cape patton monday 11th Feb, the BOM forecasted some ideal conditions, vis wasnt all too great about 3-4metres and the swell was up, one crew member got sick...

A good dive, saw lots of different species including, wrasse, sweep, trevally, snook, pinky, heaps and heaps of big leather jackets, whiting, sea mullet, dusky mowies, banded mowies, zebras and goatfish. Took what was needed and called it a day.

Time to exit the water and swell picked up heaps, timed the sets wrong and got caned onto the rocks...lost a fin....had a cry about the loss but happy to be here battered and bruised rather than not at all.

any tips on getting back to shore safely on a rough day much appreciated.

peace.

Swim around the corner of those points and come in on one of the beaches. Bastard of a walk back, but worth it. There great whiting around those sandy areas too!
