Please bear with us whilst we continue uploading pictures of common Victorian fish in the ID thread.

Big thanks to; Rhino, Shadow and Brett!

They have all spent considerable amounts of time already contributing to the thread.. At the end we will hopefully have a comprehensive fish ID list but this may take a bit of time. So please continue checking it regularly as there will be new fish in weeks to come!

No wukkas, credit where credit is due tho. On every pic the photographer is noted, you'll note that very few are mine. I just put 'em up there. A special thanks to Shadow who is not obligated to the club but has still taken the time out to resize and send me a lot of quality pics!

Thanks for working on that guys, a great resource for getting to know what's out there.
One point I'll bring up though, I've heard it said that your banded morwong (in NZ: red moki) are quite territorial and long lived (40 years was the number thrown around), and breed quite slowly. In terms of reef areas apparently once they're gone, they're gone. I know a least a couple NZ guys who won't shoot them. Don't know how true that rumour is.

Correct 80 years is around the tmax. That is why Tassie has slot limits for this species to try and preserve the larger breeding and largely territorial animals. Although I don't think that they are widely territorial just their own small patch of reef that they are prtecting for breeding. Luckily (as with most morwong species) they mature early (considering their longevity estimates). From memory its about 5 years old. I haven't taken one of these for a very long time due to their 'oldness'. That being said if I saw a lost orange roughy in the shallows I would shoot it. In the cook straight sometimes line fishermen from the shore catch blue grenadier. Now spearing one of those is impressive.

i thought it was quite good with a lot of species from all over aus but the last post on this page suggests that you are better off getting book dedicated to the specific region http://www.southernfreedivers.org.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1048
