The way I see it is that by the time you have speared and handled the fish to measure it on your gun, if undersize, the chances of it surviving after release are extremely low

Wouldn't say that, as a lot of fish can survive long periods of time out of water. Depends if they're stressed/tired

Well ... not if they have been speared
My view is that the measuring tool is really quite useful for line fishing but not for spear fishing, where one is confronted with the more difficult task of knowing the size limits and estimating the size prior to the shot, often in an instant.
I personally find it quite difficult and, when in doubt i hold the shot ... this results in less fish being taken, but also less undersized casualties.

ps. like your new avatar, very dynamic

Oi boys just because I don’t have a gun doesn’t mean that I can’t take place in the sport. Or not be an equal member of the community. As I last recalled I have taken some nice fish in my time spearing. I have learnt better hunting techniques in not diving into the sport “head first”. oh and brad have a read of the fishing guide it may pay off to know what you are shooting and relies that it is irresponsible, against the law and at the least non concretive to just shoot undersized fish or just shoot fish for the fun of shooting it. When I become a fisheries officer you among many others will be on my list of people to nab.
