Are you just target shooting,Saint? I hunt with
a Ruger Md77Mk11 in 338win mag. Heavy gun but good solid strong action. Carried it for ten years. Love it.

Have a look at the Remington7600 pump action .308 very handy gun. Great for pigs, goats and deer in close and can reach out as well. And pumps look cool. Pretty sure you can get them with pistol grip but i find them better without.

I have a howa in a 30-06 and a 243 accurate straight out of the box and trigger is easy to adjust (free from gun shop when purchased) 30-06 has more stopping power bigger range Of factory loads at the expense of greater recoil marginally less accuracy is the calibre used by Errol Mason one of Vics most reputable Sambar hunters!

saint the savage will cost you An arm and a leg, they arent cheap but they put some fantastic groups down range with factory ammo.
i had the chance to play with one in 308 with hornady superformance ammo and was hitting golf balls at 200 easy.
but that was with a very good scope. no use having a great gun and a shit scope. also the gun weighs a tone! i would hate to be trekking the hills after samba with it.

the howa will cost you alot less and still shoot alright but not as good as the savage out of the box, if you plan on reloading or accuracy then i would go the howa or better the new weatherby vanguard series 2 (sub moa).
you can also customize the shit out of the howa and throw heaps of different stocks on it.
not as heavy as the savage, you could carry it around all day up n down hills easy.

the ruger well.. for me i wouldnt even piss on a ruger. having shot a fair few of them i have never found one i like.
family and friends have owned them and always sold them.
that bugger would weigh a bit so you would want a good sling lol!
the heavy barrel will make it easier to make longer shots and hold steady but make it a bitch to shoot free hand!
good style of rifle but IMHO just a shit brand.

what kind of hunting are you going to do?
its gonna be hard to have a target rifle and do some hunting on foot with it
for targeting i would go the savage if i could afford it and reload my ammo with matchkings.

if i was hunting more oftern i would go the howa and run decent factory ammo or reload with barnes TTSX or serria gamekings.

and i wouldnt own a ruger so..

my 2c
