What stiffness blades do you use Brett? The $330 blades are medium.

You are a big lad Brett. Stiff fins is good for big lads. :P

Heard the Stingray foot-pockets are pretty good. I think that will be part of my next fin related purcahse. Not easy to come by at the moment though.

My opinion is that fiberglass fins are the way to go in our part of Oz - reef, rocks etc. comprising most of the diving.

If I were bluewater hunting though, or simply freediving I would go for some nice carbon fins, like the Spierre. They have a very good reputation.

Using carbon fins in these parts is silly, they are simply not suited as even small knocks can cause the apparently toughest fins to crack. Owch! Big money

down the hole!

I disagree with you jaz, I think that fragility of carbon fins it's just a superstition. I use carbon fins for about 10 years with no problems. I had C4 fins which I took from a frend who had already used them for 4 years, and I used them for 6 more years without mercy before they cracked. Now I have X-FIN for about 4 years without any problem. One of my frend using beuchat carbon for many years, and also nothing hapend, no cracks. Maybe in the past carbon fins were fragile, but today I believe that most of the carbon blades are ok. With carbon fins you will fill immediately relief on your legs, easier to dive, easier to swim. Less energy to dive= more breath hold.

immortal - but was yourself and your friend diving in the kind of conditions we have here? It is basically all reef and rock everywhere and it is very common to hit/scratch your fins on these, especially coming in and out some of the locations, not to mention if the water is surging. I understand that the fins are very strong but I also am quite certain that if you knock them repeatedly they are prone to cracking unlike thermoplastic and fiberglass fins (which have a different resin).

If I could afford a pair I would use them for blue water only.

Look, I can tell you that once I used thermoplastic beuchat fins and omer fins and they do cracked after a year or two in conditions I had there. Carbom fins I didn't crack yet.

Hi guys,
got an email from Martin Kurrajong - as of Monday (15th March) there were 6 people signed up for the course.

Apparently participants are booked to dive HMAS Canberra then other diver spots on the Sunday. From 11-3.

'Fraid I can't justify the cost of signing up myself - just don't get wet often enough for it.

But have fun y'all!

Its not gonna happen for me! Just bad timing, even tho I had fins sorted thanks to Leigh its still out of my control. All the best to the divers on the course, maybe one of you guys can show me how to dive properly

And for the record...350 to do this course locally is bloody good!! it's not cheaper anywhere else.

this is great! sorry to hear you didn't get out to the wreck/s mate! (leigh and students) the swell picked up for the weekend. ohh well what can you do, that's melbourne (go surfing?). as for instructors from South East Asia. melbourne has some of the most challenging ocean conditions in the world. we are blessed to be constantly challenged by mother nature's might. it's what makes us great seamen, to do a crash course in becoming an instructor you're never going to get the same intelligence as time in the water. it's just the truth. good luck to all and know your limits :P , oz.
