Its happened to us all before after hitting rocks or when the spear shaft scrapes the gun barrel or rail... the paint gets scratched and with the metal exposed it can cause rusting. Has anyone herd of any solutions to stop rusting before it happens? eg clear nail polish or a clear coat oil based paint perhaps? Just over the scratch ofcourse not a coat on the entire gun. unsure what the finish may look like on ur gun has anyone tried this before?

btw i am also talking about oxidising aluminimum. however, this can be removed if it doesnt get to bad.

Oxidising aluminium? You would have to do a good job at scratching it, considering it naturally forms a protective layer of aluminium oxide.

hey cooper, you and deano been getting to close to the rocks? if its aluminium i dont see why you couldnt just use automotive touch up paint with anti rust agents. or just use touch up paint with an anti rust primer.

A rusty gun is better then no gun boys. Stop worrying about insignificant crap.

haha yeah mate we had afew close calls with some earlier on this week but it was our faults for goin out when it was to ruff...

Not nessecarily, aluminium will oxidise even with contact to air, ever had alu. garden furniture? it will have oxidised in places. It starts off as a clear coating and will turn white and eventually if it gets worse it will get all crusty and shit.

face it boys rust and oxidising is the enemy our gear faces each time we jump in

hey mate those were the type of suggestion i was after, aluminium shouldnt rust, but it will oxidise.

It may be easier just to use a rust or oxide remover rather then a coating to prevent it, was just a thought to see if anyone had found a preventative rather then a cure

cheers on the input boys

Aluminum is actually very prone to corrosion. However, aluminum corrosion is aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion. Aluminum oxide corrosion also looks a lot more like aluminum, so it isn't as easy to notice as rusted iron.

This is natural Anodizing. Unless your whole gun is stripped back to bear aluminum I wouldn't worry about it.

If your that worried about wear and tear on your gear then why don't you coat everything in bubble wrap, Teflon & Kevlar. Or stop diving.

Has anyone got a photo of a gun that is so badly corroded that they can't shoot fish anymore??

no need to be a smart ass buddy

do you fix your car when it gets a bump or scratch? or do you wrap it in bubblewrap and stop driving?

big thanks to the more experienced spearos who take the time to explain things rather then take the piss with sarcasm and irrevelant pictures

WD-40 stops it rusting and oxidizing just dont get it on your rubbers or else it screws them up

Rusting and anodising is simply the oxidation of iron and aluminium respectively. Different names for the same process.

Aluminium when in contact with an oxidant, oxygen being an example, will oxidize and form a natural protective coating. This is called passivation and prevents further corrosion as well as some other bonuses.
When iron oxidizes, it also passivates, however this layer is permeable to water and other oxidants, so iron continues to oxidize into what is commonly called rust. This time the iron(iii) oxide does not passivate and stick to the surface but flakes off exposing the metal underneath. This will continue until one of the ingredients have been depleted or removed.

Bubble wrapping a car does seem like a cheap way to avoid scratches though!

All i can suggest is to rub the oxidized area back with wet rub, hit it with some etch primer then a few light coats of acrylic.
