I have been slack about this I know. I went back to look at what was there and what was missing and decided that I needed to re-do the postings to show proper pictures and get the text right. I went back to the old files on my computer and I am working on it - but things get in the way (like trips to Greencape). Anyway, I will continue, but cannot guarantee when I will have it all together and ready for posting. But I am working on it. Ric |

As indicated at the beginning of this thread, the pictures got lost sometime. So I re-did the description and pictures, and posted them on http://southernfreedivers.org.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4162&p=36117#p36117 This stuff is on this forum, in the gear talk section, but may have moved down a little from the top by the time you read this. I have also put in information on a DIY railgun, and it can be found at http://www.spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=153277 This is on another forum Ric |

Post subject: | Roller speargun |
Attachment: image.jpg [ 80.62 KiB | Viewed 5877 times ] After seeing how Ric built his gun I thought I would give it a go and after two winters !!I have just finished making my wooden rail roller speargun , I need to waterproof it before I take it for its final balancing , I have made the gun out of what was lying around at home but I want it to last so a little advise would be great. What would be the best to protect it from the salt water ? Marine varnish? Thanks |

Hi Jules, sorry for the later reply (im sure you have already searched and found the answers you want tho). That gun looks rad! I would suggest to seal the gun with estapol (what Ric has used) or west system epoxy 105/206 (apply in the afternoon and VERY thin coates - there really is a trick to it [pm me on extreme if you want to know more]). I'm not sure how marine varnish would go, I guess it would be ok too and the cheaper of the other options, however the other options are harder and longer lasting. I can't suggest any other advise because it looks great man! All the best on finishing her, Sam Groll (the handle is mortised in well, right? [not just glued on but glued-in]) |

Thanks for the reply. I went with the marine varnish purely on a cost factor. I will probably have to redo mid season. I reinforced the handle With oversize stainless screws so should Be ok ,time will tell , Thanks for the info Julian |

Awesome Jules, what brand of marine varnish did you buy? Is it holding up well? I have a feeling that marine varnish is pretty good although I've never used it so I'm interested to hear. Thanks |
