i think you'll find the majority of people use single tipped spears for the majority of species.. just from the info i get from other people and from seeing the guns at comps/dives.

cheers :)

They both work, fashions come and go. I like prangers for some fish and a point for others. If I was still diving comps I'd use a pranger. For hunting pinkies I like a point. Try hit a gar with a point.

Gday Frankie

The 'cluster vs straight' point debate has been going for years, and will continue for years to come!!

Personally, I use both. Cluster heads are great for hunting flatties in PPB. They are practical. If you are shooting rock flatties all day with a single point you can easily buckle your spear. Occaisonally a big flattie will get off with a single point if it hasn't been hit with a kill shot as they can use a shaft that has gone into the sea bed as leveridge.....but with a cluster they are guaranteed. And the flesh will hold up just fine after a cluster hit. Clusters are also great for King George as they can offer a small target. Lastly, clusters are great for comp diving because of all the smaller shit that is targetted.

And that's it. For every other species in Victoria I believe single point with a flopper is without doubt the best. Eg, trevs, snapper, squid, sweep, salmon, snook etc.

Stating the obvious - A shaft with a cluster attached is a lot slower through the water. Try both and see how you go.

cheers

another thing to consider in the pranger vs single point is that prangers are much more prone to damage. the cheap prangers available don't hold up well at all, and in my experience even get damaged by hitting fish in the head. I think the picasso 8" pranger is excellent but you either need a little metal working skill to maintain them or cash to buy new ones when they get damaged. I would probably use prangers more often if I could afford it.

Put the spear back in the gun, thread the fish onto your float , put your feet either side of your spear on the fish and push. Dead easy.
That being said, I once shot a gummy that took me a good 10 mins of surgery to get off, that one was going nowhere.

i am currently using a single tip with flopper but i think i will have to buy a pranger if i target the smaller species in PPB.
i think the pranger will do alot more damage to the fishes flesh if you hit it, but harder for the fish to come off

I love my pranger and always prefer it over a single spear. ( Untill I go blue water one day)

As a newb I actually found it fairly difficult to remove fish from the pranger without tearing them to bits. I also found the reduced speed of the pranger to be a little frustrating at times, although that's probably also partly due to my newb lack of hunting skill!

Can definitely see a place for prangers but at this point in time my preference is definitely the flopper.
