I'm new to spearing and I am hearing that a lot of spearos are using burley. Can anyone suggest methods and even what products are being used. Is shallow water burleying useful or a waste of time as I am only diving the waters off of Beau Maris and Black Rock, so far...

learn to hold your breath and stalk fish first. Burley won't help much until you can do that.

Thanks Greg, True but i'm not in a great depth of water so i want to bring the fish out of hiding. I'm training myself on breath control and am after any advantage I can get.

burley tends to work a treat!
the best is either to chop up unwanted fish such as either blue throat wrasse, goatfish, sea urchin eg.
or you can also take out a bag of frozen pillies and mush them up constently.
you then want to approach your burley patch with caution as there may be fish worth of spearing eating it.
in the area you mentioned it could bring in snapper, wrasse, and possably whiting. also a few other species.
hope this helped.

if your going with the pillchard burley hang it in a net bag off your float.
if your going for the fish/urchin burley just chop it up and leave it over sand which is located near reef. this is a great spot where most fish will be able to feed on it.

i use a burley bucket with some rope .. and i fill it with catfood (cocktail mix) for 75cents a can and get 700gm its got all tasty fishy bits in there with juicy oils and all sort of fishy stuff chooped up and ready to go

i found it cheaper then buying bait pillys

but i dont wanna sound like a pro but learning still myself tide times time of day help more then burley from what i see

Be sure to familiarise with the Bait and Berley chapter in the Vicorian recreational fishing guide
e.g.
[...]The use of berley that contains mammal blood or offal in Victorian waters to attract any species of fish is prohibited. This does not apply to bait pellets that contain mammal blood or offal.

i believe it follows guidelines .. line fisherman i know been using it for years seen it post of many other forums

its been put down to the wet food mixes of pillys that only contain pillys and fish oil and seafood cocktail mix with contain pillys, crab meat and fish oil .... if by any means this contains mammal blood or offal i would never use it and would not recommend it to others

but good call on bringing that up i would hate anyone to grab a can of chicken and lamb catfood and use it for burley

Also... given you mention shallow water ... beware of the taking of invertebrates in the intertidal zone, whether you keep them or plan to use them as berley
