Hello new to the world of spearfishing and was wondering the recommendations on floats?
was thinking of either a hard 11L float or was wondering what people feel about the omer Shadanas and the Omer atoll? not really fussed about the money just want to get the right one first... or is it a matter that you may need 1 of each to suit the application? thanks guys!!

I have both of the omer floats, the atoll is good if you want to take out a 250ml water bottle or some spares it has 3 pockets to put things in and also has the capability to carry two extra guns underneath it by use of velcro straps and you can also hang things off it. The shadana is a hard body float and is the same size as a body board it also has the capability to store spare parts and a larger size drink bottle in a bag what velcros onto the top of the float and can carry spare guns on top but is weighty, I used it in comps but use my atoll for the bay. If you get a chance go into legendary and have a look, they have a great selection of floats. Picasso now do a float similar to the atoll but a little larger and I would have got that one instead of the atoll if it was on the market at the time. Most people in the club use a inflatable torpedo floats in either 11L or 35L.

2 floats is ideal.
a smaller float for small to average sized vic species you will encounter on just the average dive like pinkies, flattys squid etc. make sure you get something that you can hang stuff off like a torch, safety gear for comps and whatever else you want

second float is larger and as suprising as it may be, is designed for taking the bigger fish you'll get down here like kingies and tuna if your ambitious. also good if your going up north or whatever.

imo, start with something small like the picasso floats for the bay and average dives. dont try kill two birds with one stone and get a big float. its a pain in the ass to carry and tow when your only going out for squid and your reefies in the bay

Inflatable floats....eventually ...deflate.
Hard floats don't.
Big floats are easier to see.
Small floats are easier to carry to the beach.
Drag is only increased when you hang shit off them.

if your new to spearfishing all you need is something to show a flag above water and keep your catch on. try it and see what attachments and adjustments you need!

I've got a Ronstan that my dad was using in the late 60's and it is just about due for retirement. I'd love to see an inflatable last like that.

Allot of us guys over this side use the Rob Allen 8 or 11 L rigid float.

i second that. They are bullet proof floats that will take an absolute hiding. Handy if you are doing a heap of shore diving ocean side.

I've got an 11L inflatable and although it does the job I'd probably buy a similar sized hard float next time. As Brett mentioned, the inflatable often loses air pressure which results in a sagging dive flag making you less visible to boat users. Also mine often unintentionally gets dragged against rocks and I'm always wary of popping it despite the nylon outer. On the plus side, they pack up nice and small so if size is an issue then an inflatable isn't so bad.

Get a hard float. How often do you want to be puffing away (on a float) on the beach. Get hard, get in (the water).
