I got my self a Omer cayman et 95, just had a new 19mm power band put on, if I get a second 19mm band put on would this be ok to attempt to shoot a kingy? As I always see people using 130-140 for kings? It has a 6.5mm shaft btw
Thanks in advance

Set up like that you should have no problem hitting a kingy within range..and those ET guns have great range anyway! I don't reckon you need the extra band..

You might hit one but weather u land it or it tears off is up to you, and the reason people target them with bigger guns is for the range as most kings u won't get close enough to use a 95!

Certainly true, but bigger guns are much better at getting through the fish. A 1.8 metre 7mm spear is about half as heavy again as a 1.4 metre 6.5 mm spear, which translates to a lot more penetrating power down range, and a lot bigger chance of the flopper getting through. Kings have been shot with short guns and thin spears, but it wouldn't be my first choice at least. I'd also guess twin 19s on a 6.5 spear will make your gun shoot all over the show, even with an enclosed track. That is if the mech doesn't disengage under the strain.

A second band will throw the spear a little bit further but not much. it will also make the spear wobble as you fire it, give a lot more recoil, less accuracy and less precision.
A longer gun will give you more range but if your not used to using it you won't hit much with it.
Your best bet is to stick with what you have and hang within range of your flasher.

Surfcoastspearo what makes you think an Omer ET has any more range than any other gun set up the same way and the same length

Thanks for the replys, so best off sticking how it's set up now and try getting close enough if I was going to use the 95? So say range is 3.8m (4x 95cm) with single loop with just penoing the flopper through if it has the hitting force? a 1.4 will have a range of 5.6m (4x140cm), how much force/speed drops off over say 3 meters?

But best bet would just be buying a 1.3/4 gun and gettif used to it?

With a reel, you set it at next to no drag? Say I end up hitting the fish in a nice holding spot with peno, fish takes off do I end up holding onto the line to the reel and trying to fight it or do you lock it off and use the float to fight it and wait till it tires and pull it up?

Barry, the omer importer has just got 7mm et spears in. If you do power up the gun with a second band a thicker spear may help with punch at distance and less flex when firing. You will be able to get one ordered from any dive shop the sells omer guns. They aren't cheap at $140-150rrp and you still wont have the range of a 130 or 140 gun. I think you should put you money towards a longer gun and save the 95 et for the bay.

Good luck,
Tim

i wouldn't recommend getting more than a 1.2 its over kill for vic and a 12 with double wrap has a long range! Im looking at smaller guns because the 1.2 is kingies only, its difficult to use in and around reef like vic.

I have shot a grey mackerel at approx 10kg with a 90 and it punched through but the fish was only a few meters away, however it was when i was learning and didn't know to let go of the gun so it ended up ripping out. The king in my photo i got with a 1.2 but that was out in 30m of water with around 20 vis. i don't know how common that would be in vic...

I really like the Omer et's but they only come in 115 and 130 which would be your pic of the two? How do the other guns compare in similar price range (300-400)?

I got my old gun I probly won't use any more u can have for cheap, it's a mares phantom fv95 with a brand new 16mm screw on bridle dynimea(sp) power band

Ive learnt the hard way, ive decided if you like something and your intending to stick with it, dont go cheap ! Your better off waiting and going for quality gear so you dont have to do the same thing over and over till you find your preferance. To be honest im still shifting with gear and i believe it will never end !

For Victoria you want a 90cm -100cm gun for most of the time and a 120cm -130cm gun for hunting Kings. As for the buying cheap discussion we see it all the time, the poor man pays twice!
