I want to give spearfishing a go, ive only gone with a hand spear once in nsw and had a really good time, i really want to try out a spear gun but need to know where i can get some cheap gear so i can find out if spearfishing is for me or not, ive become pretty set on the omer comanche for a gun but any other gear i can find seems to expensive for a total beginner, would really appreciate any help that can be offered for fins, gloves, wetsuits(not sure what i need for melbourne??), mask/snorkel and anything else i need. (i was planing to get a reel instead of float)

any help that can be offered would be so appreciated, here is the link to a starters pack i found and was thinking about but not sure if its worth it or even right for melbourne etc etc etc

Thanks
Ric

Gday Ric

Get some decent gear first up and you will enjoy yourself a lot more.

Stay away from a reel if you are just starting out. Most important piece of gear is your float & flag as boat traffic is the biggest danger to Vic spearos, especially in PPB.

I'm on a pretty tight budget though and good gear is so expensive, tho I do except u are right, I will certainly take your advice on the float as I don't want to be unsafe, any hints on cheap gear that isn't total crap? I can't afford to spend much more than $600-$700 all up and my gun will be about $200 so I'm not sure i can afford to buy very good gear :(

The setup in the link you posted is missing some gear (float, flag, floatline, gun, hood, booties, weight belt, knife) you could look at doubling that price easy. The quality of the gear looks pretty crap too.

If you can stretch your self a bit further with the dollars you might want to look at something like this, although you would be buying a mask etc without trying it on first but the gear would be much better quality and the setup is pretty much complete.

Or try and get some second hand gear, it pops up from time to time but not usually complete packages. Browse the forum and you'll see what others think of certain brands etc. Going up that extra bit on the quality makes a big difference to your experience in the water I reckon.

That set looks a lot better, I guess the main concern I have is that I'll buy it and won't use it much then feel like I've wasted $1000
I don't have a car and live in coburg so it's already a big stretch to get anywhere worth going, along with the fact that I'm inexperienced and have no friends down here that do it so I'd be flying solo, by the sounds of things I need to with go the whole way or not at all tho, thanks for the advice and links guys, greatly appreciated, I suppose now is decision time :)

Hi Ric, welcome to the southern freedivers forum. You'll find some great prices on very good gear at the following "local" stores where you can try for size and get great advice.

http://www.esclapezaustralia.com.au
http://www.legendary.com.au

You'll be able to pick and choose accordingly to your budget.

Also Get yourself to a club meeting and meet new dive buddies and see some second hand gear for sale and hear some dive reports over a cold bevy.

peace.

Hi Redbullah welcome to the SFD forums...the following links might help you:

http://southernfreedivers.org.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3878

Alternatively you can make use of the search function and type in "wetsuit" (as I did) which you'll find a whole heap of previous posts with useful information that covers the topic!

Peace.

Thanks so much nigz, I think I'm going to get an esclapez setup, looks like an awesome option, I'll look into coming to a club gathering too as I have no one to dive with and would love to not go alone every time an get a few pointers :)

Cheers

So I am ordering my 1m cressi comanche in just over a week after payday, any advice on the quality of the comanche? Is this an alright choice for a beginner? All my research tells me it is although I am worried that its to dated. I found it for $190 delivered so its under the price I was aiming for which is nice.

Have you not seen the for sale section on this forum in the last few days
You'll get a better deal than that.
