I don't think there's any issues with bringing them in. I used to travel to Indonesia and back to Australia with my spearguns in my surfboard bag, never had a problem. I used to check them in as special luggage, mostly because of the size of the bag though.
Obviously you won't be able to bring them in your carry on luggage
Also, welcome to Melbourne, happy new year, and come along to a SFD meeting.

Get a proper case for it and there wont be any issues, even use a golf bag. There would only be an issue if it was freshwater fishing equipment. Seawater fishing equipment is fine.

Wrap them in bubble wrap and put them in a box. It's cheap, light and when customs ask what they are you tell them they are spearguns. No issues.

PVC pipe with an elbow on one end that has a bit cut out so you can get it over your handle works well. I've done this on domestic flights with no problems. They don't fit on the luggage carousel though, you have to pick them up from the desk.

+1 for the PVC plastic pipe. I too have used this method when traveling domestic and internationally, works well.

Probably best to say its fishing equipment not just come straight out and say spear guns, people that don't have much knowledge just seem to expect the worse when you mention the gun part.

Agree with watto - I just can bak from the states - with a few spearguns and knives - did tick the weapon box on the form - when they asked what I had, I was honest - all they did was X-ray my bag and that was it! The word gun does get them a bit more edgy!

Snowboard bag, with spears out of the guns in a PVC pipe (also in bag). Fits all of your gear and plenty more , and nobody bats an eyelid at the airport.

Just no Powerheads and you'll be right.
And yeah, as long as you declare them you'll be right.
