Hey Guys,

Looking at getting a freediving watch / computer, but really don't want to spend a lot of cash.

Functionality wise, I'm really only after:
- Depth
- Temperature
- Time
- Doesn't *look* like a dive watch (much).

I've been looking at one of these, a "Pyle Snorkel Master"

Link here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pyle-PSNKW30GN-Snorkeling-Master-Sports-Watch-/330883161341?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d0a2c5cfd&_uhb=1#ht_1572wt_1163

From what I've read, its an identical computer / firmware as the Omer MIK 1, and the Ocaris Dive Time, with different cases / finish.
I figure for ~90 bucks plus shipping, its not going to be fantastic, but will likely do the job.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these watches? What are they like?

No surface time = pointless.

But you'll get really good at relaxed ascents: "Dive Alarm when emerging faster than 6m/minute"

I dare say that's for bubble blowers, though this watch doesn't have any NDC / deco algorithms in it, so idk why they'd even bother with an ascent alarm.

A tall order if you want something inexpensive. My Citizen Aqualand II Titanium is 15-year old and still going (well, almost, it is under repair now) and it has all the right functions/ergonomics for a freediver... but surely isn't cheap http://www.entique.com.au/?p=4033 (at Salera's it is sold for 1.200 AUD though)

My Aeris F10 is awesome. Does everything I need it to do and more. It has certainly helped me improve my diving a lot, well worth the money.

From what I can find on the web the Pyle and Omer mk1 are identical except the cases, with the sporasub sp1 being very similar again just slightly tweaked to log more dives plus it has a surface timer. I respect a surface timer is a dam good safety feature, but I've never had one previously so...

Pyle - $90
Omer - $270
SP1 - $335
Prices off Amazon

The reviews for the Pyle are ok with the odd bad one. Most of the issues are sorted by a reset by removing the battery, or replacing the battery as some were delivered to customers flat.

For the $90 bucks think I might give one a go soon.

The Pyle is cheap and seems pretty good/accurate to me.

I have been using mine for almost a year and three others in the group I dive with also have them.

Obviously it's missing a few bells and whistles and the rotating face is a complete waste of time.

Go the aeris f10 if you don't want to spend too much and have a great computer. I've got the f11 and it's more capable then what ever I can do!

Ok well I ordered a Pyle Snorkel Master from Amazon. $98 bucks delivered and for all intensive purposes it does the job nicely. Yeah it dosent have a surface timer, but seriously I can only hold my breath for a max of 3 minutes (and I mean max, thats on a dam good day) and after that Im usually pretty knocked up for a good 5-8 minute recovery anyway. The watch jumps back to a normal watch mode on the surface and I can just double my dive time and keep an eye on the time. Its not that hard.

There are a lot of reviews online that said the watch has been delivered with a flat battery, but my watch was turned off when delivered and required me to hold the mode button down for 3 seconds to power it up, so no issues there yet.

Testing in the pool the depth gauge is accurate enough and the temp works fine. Out of the water the temp is basically your skin temperature. I had the flu for the last two weeks so have been out of the water except for some pool training so I will get some pictures/movie of it underwater etc when I use my gopro next.

Heading up to Port Douglass next Saturday for a week so will give it a good run up there.

Value for money - 10/10 - $98 bucks
Fit and finish - 4/10 - it feels cheap and it aint no Aeris or Omer etc
Function - 7/10 - There are better watches out there, but it does the job
Overall -7/10 - Thanks to the value

Cheers
Chris

Sorry mate - hadn't been checking the forums for a while.

Yeah, its not bad for the price. Same computer as the Sporasub SP1 and the Omer MIK1, without the fancy facade, for about 1/4 of the $$$.

I like it. No surface timer but meh, stopwatch can do that just as well, if not 'automatically'. Might upgrade in a few years but at the moment it does the job nicely.

Hows yours going?

It is a waste of time having a watch which doesn't log surface time. Surface time is the main reason to have one. Especially given resent events where someone in our club nearly lost their life due to trying to stay down to long and watch watching. Life isn't always about what costs less, it's about quality.
3min is a bloody long time to be underwater on breath hold, either your and amazing athlete or full of shit.
Please refrain from putting max times crap on the forum as I don't want to see anyone die from pushing the limit. And certainly don't want novice divers thinking it's important, because it isn't. You don't have to hold your breath more than a minute to spear amazing fish.
