I have a Rob Allen Sparid 1200, and I'm getting a go pro (hero3+) quite soon, but I'm not sure where to attach it to on my gun.

I don't want to use a head strap in the bay because I'm mainly in 3m of water and the swell would kill the video as I'm always at the surface.

What are your opinions? - would replacing the pin that holds the gun cassette with a screw (4mm) and bolting an aluminium bracket to the back of the handle be too far away from the action or would that be perfect?

Get a shorter gun for starters. I prefer to hold my cameras in my hand. It gives a different perspective to a shot rather than the monotonous straightline down the barrel which is way too common.

Do a search Mitchell 28, this has been covered numerous times.............BUT
I don't mind the gun mounted cam, but I reckon Brett is right with the best footage coming from hand held.
A simple monopod like this, https://dx.com/p/pannovo-g-90-cnc-aluminum-handheld-camera-mount-pole-for-gopro-hero-2-3-249720 will work will and a lanyard to keep it attached to yourself. I Mount a torch under mine for cave footage too, works well!

My primary concern is the shaky footage if I'm holding it with a pole, or will it be dead still? Just my hand movements would be awkward, and withit on the gun it is steady, and when I shoot a fish I don't have to let go of the go pro to dispatch it.

If you hand held the camera without the pole, it would be a bit shaky, but monopods generally have a bit of weight to em, so it helps eliminate some of the shake. Also the fact that its not directly in your hand, but rather out a bit helps reduce shake.

Best solution for zero shake is to have a weighted sled type apparatus with two handles and the gopro mounted in the middle between, but that's unmanageable if you're also using a speargun.

the head strap works great, I just bought a monopod which I'm going to use as well the only concern is that once your battery does die, you still have to swim around with the go pro hanging from your wrist? whereas if you're wearing a head strap it's not really interfering with anything.

be careful with it, maybe you could attach a safety clip to your mask? I've dropped mine a few times in the bay and have felt it fell off but might be easier to lose completely in open water.

I have it under my hood as well as putting my snorkel through it so if it feels it can only fall if my mask falls off. Works great.
