Hey guys,
I'm currently using a freedivers protege, and was wondering if it's worth trying to put on an extra rubber and a longer gun line for kingies?
Or would i be better served buying a larger reel gun?
Seen a few in the past few weeks and have been abit nervous to shoot them as i don't wanna lose my gun!

All advice is appreciated.

Cheers lads!

Advice..
1. No extra rubber. An overpowered gun is an inaccurate gun.
2. 120 or more is the preferred length, although you can shoot them with anything if you get close enough.
3. Float and line rather than reel for a while.
4. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER not take a shot on a passing King. It is a sin of the highest magnitude.

1. Okay brilliant.
2. So best to get a second gun? As my Protege is 110Cm.
3. As in a drag float mate? Or my standard bullet float?
4. As i've never speared one yet, do you mind explaining why?

Cheers mate, appreciate the prompt response :)

110 is fine. 120 is better. 130 is better again. They are only fish...any float you are comfy with. I use a 9 litre hard float. 20 metre rigline. Rarely, have I ever even needed the float as the fight has / is always from the line. But the bigger the better just in case. Float is to carry fish while looking for another one. Kingies are rare enough in Vic without letting one pass by.....never pass up on a chance. When you get one you will understand.

How much water were you in? and were the kings alone or in small schools?

I got a 95cm Gun with a 50m Reel on it attached to a 20m floatine with a hardfloat...

Haven't seen schools. Seen Rat kings here and there, probably to a metre or so.

A metre isn't a rat unless your a Kiwi. That's a good fish for Vic.

I have seen a 165kg Black Marlin taken with a tail shot. In general though you shouldn't take Hail Mary shots, you have an ethical obligation as a Spearo to do your very best to secure the beast and not let it swim of to die.

I put an extra rubber on my freedivers protégé and as brett mentioned it becomes inaccurate. Heaps of power but just lose accuracy too much. Also I found that there was so much pressure on the trigger that sometimes it wouldnt fire at all at some very inopportune moments. So you also have to pull the trigger MUCH harder to ensure it fires and this only adds to the inaccuracy. If you wanted a bit more power maybe just put a slighty shorter band but not too much. I have found the freedivers protégé a very accurate gun in its stock form so im not going to mess with mine anymore maybe just a slightly shorter band and that's it. It was fun to try out the double band though, it had a ton of power :P

There are a few options you can look at... you could rig it with 18mm band (although I've found this works better with a 7mm spear)... if you want to have 2 X 16mm or 20mm band then you definitely need a 7mm spear (which is the Evolution or the Bluewater Freedivers as the Protoje comes standard with 6.5mm spear)... the heavier spear will adjust for the spear wobble with more power....
Having sold Rob Allen and Freedivers equipment for the last 7 years in Cape Town I must say that the standard setups on most of the guns are perfect and you don't need to do much doctoring to them but when you start adding or tweaking on them you just need to be careful not to power them up too much...
I've also put a Rollerpowerhead unit on a 1.1 which adds a lot of power with hardly any recoil...
