Post subject:  The one that got away. Techniques?

A couple of times recently I have hit fish and upon retrieval they have gotton off the spear and away. I have lost 2 snapper (1 tonight) because of this.

I hit them pretty hard but it seems that the spear doesnt penetrate through enough for the flopper to take effect. I tried getting to it quickly tonight to hold the spear down but I wasnt quick enough. The fish go rigid and then 10 seconds later burst into life and wiggle off my spear!

Im using a Pelagic 900 on the last notch.

Any tips?

Tune your flopper so it opens and stays open, sharpen your spear but more importantly, get closer.

Make sure your flopper is tuned properly, grab the fish on the same breath that you shoot it don't pull it up by the shaft.

Thanks guys.

restoring my faith as I was pretty frustrated last night.

how do I tune the flopper and what should I be aiming for? It not sticky and opens freely. Should I be trying to get it to stay open once open?

It should be free and not sticky until about halfway open.
Use a ballpeen hammer and tap the flopper pin against a hard surface checking after every few taps

Ever tried using a pranger ? They don't get away then! If you're going to dive comps, nearly a " must ", but some guys don't use them.
