Competitions

CLUB SERIES COMP
This is our main competition it is a scoring event run over 8 different competition locations throughout our Calender Year.
Who Can Enter
Anyone, providing the person is a current AUF Member and hold a Current Victorian Fishing Licence.
Whats the AUF
The Australian Underwater Federation (AUF) is a governing spearfishing body that the southernfreedivers subscribe to. They are committed to the health, safety and general well-being of all its members as well as providing sports insurance.
How do the comps run
Each competition is usually held monthly and in a different Victorian location each time. The aim of the comp is to shoot “one of each of our Eligible Vic species” that have been selected on our Competition Score Sheet. Competitors receive points plus bonus points for weight providing that they have met certain min size/weight requirements on our Score Sheet. Usually the overall winner of each comp has the highest amount of species.
What if im new and im not sure what to shoot
You can either check our score sheet beforehand and if there is a species you are unsure about, you can Google Image the fish species in question or even easier we will be providing in the very near future a good representation of most of the species underwater. These Pictures will be put in COMMON VICTORIA FISH(INFORMATION & IMAGES). There will also be a Miscellaneous Page for other common and not so common Vic fish species. If you are ever in doubt of a fish species, you should take a mental note and NOT shoot the fish.
Im apprehensive in regards to competing as im not sure how well I will do.
It’s common for all competitors to be apprehensive in their first competition. We have 3 grades A grade, B grade and C grade. We have men/women/junior competitors with all different levels of experience. There is no pressure on newcomers they are placed in C grade which is usually filled with beginner divers and social divers. In fact C grade many believe is the backbone of the club. As in most comps there will be more C grade competitors than other grades. In the end it’s up to the individual on how competitive they would like to be. It’s also up to the discretion of the competitor if they want to officially weigh their catch in.
Is there anything else I need to know
-We normally charge a fee of $15 per senior competitor and junior competitors there is a $5 fee. This money is spent on providing a barbecue at the end of the competition (Eg purchasing soft drinks, bread and meat)
-Along with this fee we require all competitors to fill out a registration entry form which includes indemnity.
-Each diver is required to have their own float, safety flag, mirror and whistle. Click on link and check under SAFETY in Competition Rules Attachment http://www.southernfreedivers.org.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4045

VIC CHALLENGE
This is a prestigious selective spearfishing competition which SFD club members hold in high regard as it competitor’s target 10 of Victorian's premium species.
Whiting / Trevally 340g
Flathead / Sweep / Squid / Australian Salmon / Snook / Snapper 400g
Crayfish 1000g
Kingfish 3000g
A very strategic competition that continues to grow in popularity each year. Different from other comps as competitors have the discretion of choosing to dive anywhere anytime in Victoria between early Sept and start of June.

OTHER COMPS
Pairs Comp

A pairs competition that solely promotes safe diving in a pairs/buddy system. A novice diver is paired with an experienced diver for the duration of the comp. it encourages coaching and mentoring.

Hey Paul,
As far as im aware, we do let USFA members compete just like other comps in Australia.
USFA members wanting to compete need to prove that there membership is current. The best way of doing this is to bring their current USFA membership card to the competition with them.
