i was talking to my old man about diving in the bay off a boat and he said he knows a good spot and there's a few gummys there very often.
just wanna know if you knew your gun could do it, would you shoot a gummy?

If your gun can't land a gummy get a new gun. Ive shot a few over the years in westernport.
Pranger in the head and they aren't going anywhere. It just takes a while to get the pranger out. Ive even unscrewed the pranger and used it to toggle them it goes in so well.

If I didn't think my gun could take a gummy I'd wrestle it, haha, whats it gonna do? gum me? Worst case you lose your gun, but that wouldn't be due to your gun not being able to handle it, probably more due to your set up, ie: float and so on. My instinct would be to aim for the brain and try to kill it on impact. how ever I have no idea of how a gummy behaves so don't know if that would be a feasible option?

They don't go very hard when you shoot them from above from fairly close range. Nearly every one I've got has been sitting in weed and let me get close. I don't think they move around much during the day and when you find a place that they rest it's worth revisiting.

Don't they generally like dirty water like western port? Would make diving for them a bit crap? I'd love to spear a gummy, biggest thing I've shot is a about a 60cm frog.

hey greg, where abouts in westo do you spear for gummys and what depth?

ive landed gummys and a rod to 20+kgs, these sharks area a real handful , even the little 3 footers.
a head shot or through the gills would be my only advice if targeting

I don't really want to say where because it's my bad weather spot and always good for a feed of flatty/flounder.
Look for big areas of weed bed near sand and look in the weed. They tunnel into it. The biggest I've got would be just under six foot. Unfortunately it was before digi photos and I've only got a slide.
A hint is to look between Hastings and Flinders. They aren't in deep water<10m

I really want to have the time to dive round that area. Problem is I work through the week and the weekends have been shit for pretty much the whole of summer in Western Port. Apparently there is plenty of very good reef in Westernport between Hastings and Flinders Barra. You should go to the newsagents, and buy the Fishing Victoria mag. It is a large publication (a3 size) and most of it is black and white, but there are some great reports there that I reckon might point you in the right direction in Westernport.

Cheers tom.
i have been a subscriber of VFM since it started, i have fished western port more times than i had warm dinners.never dived it though.
every time i have fished it there has never been more than 1m vis, due to the currents.

tortise head is a spot id like to try, always heaps of fish there.Anyone dived there?

Merricks beach is a great landbased spot for gummys, 7 gills and other rubbish sharks.
Its also a great spot to catch whiting, i also landed a 2 foot rockling there.
