That's what they used to get around town in those days

Hey Tom, mate there are plenty of big 2ish kg zebs around, always have been, some great specimens were weighed in at the last comp. And for the not good eating argument, they are great pickled or smoked, or both (smoked then picked).

Bump... my first fish that I speared was a stingray off the southern reef (Aspendale side) of Mordialloc pier in around 1986 with a cavalero champion then a 2ish kg banded morwong off Bastion Point with a Sea Hornet Tourist around 1989 secured my diving passion.

Haha misunderstanding. I was saying they got around town on horses in those days. Having a dig at Greg.

First time spearfishing and caught about 1kg leather jacket with hand spear at Black Rock 2009 First time caught with speargun was sting ray again at Black Rock. Never again shot stingray. Learnt my lesson especially with wrap line attached to the shaft. I normally fished the sting ray and released them but that was one off i caught sting ray for my mate cos he asked what it taste like he wanted to know what it tasted like. I've kept approx 10 cm twin barbs from my first shot sting ray.

My first was also a couple of big Kelpies.
My family camps down at Aire river near cape otway every year and one year i brought a little half size hawiian sling down to the beach at low tide and jumped in at the rocks to see if i could find anything, i remember swimming along in about 1.5 meters of water in a rock pool when i saw this massive kelpie (back then one of the biggest fish i had seen) i followed it thinking it was a rare sight, when it led me to literally a pile of about 30 50cm fish just sitting on top of each other in a corner of the rockpool, I spent about 10 minutes chasing them around the rock pool untill i managed two out of a ledge. i was so proud and excited to cook them...untill the gutting where i noticed the flesh looked almost blue in colour, it all went downhill from there and although i think we did eat some of them i havent speared one since.

My first fish i speared with a Hawaiian Sling was a 30cm Leatherjacket at cottage reef.

My first fish with a speargun was at portarlington, A 40cm flathead, followed by a 60cm morwong. Always going to remember that trip because of the biggest stingray id ever seen was chasing me trying to eat my Morwong on my float line!
