Gday fellas, wasn't sure where to post this so thought I'd put it in here..

Setting up a little tinny to do a bit of spearing from and have a 5hp 2 stroke force motor on the back which is clean and runs well, but difficult to start.. Have been using 'Start ya bastard' to fire it up, but don't want to rely on this out on the water. Motor has good compression and spark, and carb has been thoroughly cleaned by me, so i'm thinking maybe the idle mixture, air leak or a fraction out on timing??

Anyway, wondering if there are any outboard motor gurus on here who could help a brother out and wouldnt mind having a look for me? happy to bring it to you and of course there would be rewards :) more importantly I'd like to see whats happening, which I dont get to do, if I take it straight to an outboard mechanic..

Anyway, hope someone could help me out, cheers! Jez :)

I'm not a guru but can suggest the following simple minor checks
Sparks: if they ard old replace or clean them, making sure the gap at the top is not too wide
Clean fuel line toroughly as oil deposits might have accumulated over time
Carb should be cleaned due to same issue above
Make sure you use the right oil-fuel ratio and use good oil

Try chock on, one pull only then chock off and see if it starts.
I have found that keeping the chock on floods these little outboards.

BTW ... fuel line includes anything from the tank to the carburettor
very easy to do but makes a difference.
And of course ... P.Diddy advice to close the choke is important, can't leave it on too much.

How old is the fuel? Once mixed with 2stroke it goes off quickly. Replace all the fuel too. When you say good compression, how much in psi? Or did you give it the thumb test?

sorry I didnt respond sooner guys, must not have my notifications set up right!

No difference with choke on or off, compression approx 80-90 psi with tester, fuel lines new, fuel pump works (can see fuel spurting, when fuel line disconnected and cranking by hand) fuel is new, 50:1 with outboard 2t oil.

It starts straight up with a tiny squirt of aerostart, then runs beautifully, just a real pain to start, and def dont want to rely on aerostart because I'd heard its not great on 2t engines

i wonder if its idle mixture or timing slightly out?
