The quickest way of preparing them I have seen is to put a colander into a bucket full of sea water, chop them open with one cut from a cleaver and scrape all off the innards into the colander. Once you have opened them all swish the water around a bit then pick out the orange bits.
It doesn't take long or that much effort. Only problem is they don't taste good.

Apparently the NZ ones did taste better than the AUS variety. Not sure myself, i think they are highly over-rated as a food source.
