My apologies for not being able to make the meeting tomorrow evening in Dandenong. I have prioer commitments, but would like to have made it. My best wishes go out to the dive injured, and those who witnessed the incident.

Tom

It's a shame any talk about the incident is getting locked. Myself and others are unable to make the meeting. So here say is all people have to go off. I feel sorry for the guy, if it was me i would want people discussing what happened and how to prevent it rather than rumours going around. But hey...probably best to keep it quite so those who aren't attending can't learn from others mistakes.

Guys please keep in mind for many people this was a very traumatic experience, there was a very real possibility that a fellow club member and friend could have died. So far there has been no opportunity for counseling or a formal debrief. Until this has occurred, not only do we not really know what happened, but people involved should not have to deal with the opinions and judgments of those who were not there.

I have no doubt that there will be a comprehensive review involving all club members at the right time, please have some sensitivity for those affected in the mean time.

JJS and tvolke,

The main objective of tonight is to see how people who were involved with the incident are coping. Neither of you were there and let me tell you it wasn't a very nice experience. The fact you used sarcasm to comment on the matter really pisses me off!

We will also be doing an incident report of the events of Sunday that we will be circulating to all clubs to allow them to learn from the accident and how we handled it. I'm sure that it will make it's way to the forum soon enough and it will allow the general public to learn from it.

Just remember whilst you were nice and snuggled in bed up on Sunday night there were atleast 20 spearo's who did not sleep so well at the thought a mate was in hospital and might not make it through the night.

Next time have some tact! It has been 2 days since the accident give everyone a bit of time to digest the event.

The sarcasm was inappropriate, but learning from what happened should also be very important. Again, i feel really bad for the guy, and all his friends/family. I have nearly lost friends due to accidents, and one of the first things we discuss is what went wrong and how to prevent it.
When the time is right, I hope the incident is discussed. To help clear up all the rumours about what happened, and to learn from.

Join the club boys and you'll be in the loop. Or read the paper like everyone else, just because you post on the forum doesn't entitle you to any more info than any other non club member! This was a club incident and will be handled accordingly! That's what joining the club is about, learning about safety, having mates that understand to back you up etc. And I'm pissed too, this is a club forum that your demanding info from don't forget!

You have to understand that the media have access to anything posted on here about this incident. Therefor the club does not want people who have no idea what they are talking about (and there is plenty of them on this forum) discussing this topic in an open forum. Why is this so hard for some of you to understand. Whenever someone gets charged with something these days the media is all over there facebook page, this is no different. I can see it now - the herald sun quoting some nuffy from this forum, and it looking like an official SFD statement on the topic.

I am a SFD club member. The only comp i do is the Vic Challenge. I make meetings maybe twice a year. The club has allowed me to meet and dive with people i would never of had the chance of diving with. The SFD club has taken my spearfishing to a level i would have never have been able to achieve otherwise.

Tvolke it didn't happen to a diver not in a club, it happened to a SFD club member at a sanctioned club comp. Therefor it is ultimately a club issue that has to be dealt with accordingly.

Rhino- I didn't realize i came across as demanding information. I had read the newspaper articles, seen it on the news and heard talk from people. But i am still unsure of what happened exactly. I thought it would be a good thing to learn from. It just seems to be going backwards from the sports point of view. Again, i don't want to offend or cause people to get angry. I just thought it would be good to hear the real story and learn from it, instead of people making there own judgement about what happened.

No worries guys, I'll leave it at that. If an outcome is chosen to be shared some time then so be it.
Cheers.

The club is already discussing new safety methods, and these will be available publicly when they are confirmed. You will be able to learn from this, and or any other mistake. Patience.
