Hey guys, on my last dive my camera mount on my gun broke so I'm trying to make a new and better one. Does anyone know where to get stainless screws and bolts that will be safe to use in salt water (that won't rust)? I'm especially looking for a screw that will fit into the bottom of the camera - photo shops sell them but they are not stainless. Do I just go to any hardware store or should I look for a specialized marine shop?

Thanks in advance!

- Rasmus

I thik the screw is a 1/4 inch imperial thread and you should be able to buy a pack of them from bunnings in 316 stainless steel what ever length you need

Hey mate, not 100% sure but at least 90%. I think putting stainless screws into stainless threads can actually cause them to corrode a little and bond. I remember hearing how fisherman would still use mild steel screws cos it was easier to replace the screws.. then have it all jam up..

just a tought

I think I will try with the stainless steel screws and then change them if they start to corrode.. thanks for the tip though!

No luck at Bunnings, they told me to go somewhere called J B Marine, but I googled it and couldn't find it. Any marine shops that you could recommend?

jv is now BCF (boating, camping, fishing) but just go to any nut and bolt place like coventry fasteners ask for 316 stainless and you will pay a tenth of the cost if you buy them from any marine store.

1/4" - 20TPI is the standardized camera mounting thread @ 316 SS - Bunnings

SS in SS is no problem especially same grade.

You may get galvanic corrosion using dissimilar metals.

Made my mounting bracket from aluminium with SS screws.

It corrodes, but those few hours in the water are inconsequential, then you wash the whole lot in fresh water (or you should unless you want to wreck your housing/camera seals) and spray the bracket with WD40.

If you wash stainless steel with fresh water and let it dry (don't store damp) it won't rust. Otherwise, i use Monel instead of SS, works wonders. Go to a yacht store, they should have what you need.

No luck at Bunnings with 316 SS.. they only had 306 SS (I think that was what they were called).

I ended up in a Marine shop in the city and got an L bracket, screws, washers and bolts. Now the challenge is to find a place to drill a 1/4 inch and a 5mm hole in the L bracket, in Europe we use the metric system so all my existing screws are in mm.. 8)
