I used a hawian sling for 3 years. Have shot more and better quality species with it then my current gun. Stephen. |

Thomo wrote: much range on it Stephen? I found range not to be an issue, the hand spear makes you be more stealthy and sneak up behind the fish. The only time range can be an issue is if you are constantly targeting schooling pelagic fish. If your just swimming around the bay, you deffinetly get your $40 worth. Stephen |

I use one, only ever tried a gun a few times and didn't like it for the type of spearing I was doing. I liked being able to reload in a split second for another shot at schooling bream or salmon or pinkies, etc, and I liked being able to support myself on it whilst having a breather and a yak (obviously not in deeper water just 2.5m stuff) Anything bigger (large salmon or snapper, etc) it is no good for, as the fish can just tear off. If I get serious about spearing I intend to get a gun, but for scooting about the bay foraging for a feed of flathead or whatever I can hunt down, it is perfect IMO. |

I got splinters in my hands, and they tended to to stray downwards during the shot because they were too heavy. I still have/use this old anodized blue 2 piece alloy sling that is tapered towards the ends. It is brilliant and shoots as straight as a laser through the water. Don't know if they make them anymore. |

I've used hawaiin sling for past couple of years and found it so much fun for starting out spearing. It does allow you To "reload" quick for another shot at the fish if missed. Though now using a gun I only miss my hand spear for that reason. I changed to a gun due to the size of fish I was missing as the spear head comes out easier. Since I've changed to the gun I have managed to hold onto the 50cm+ fish alot easier but it's annoying when the whiting and smallier fish swim by and I wish I had a handspear with me.. As this happens alot I carry both gun and sling in the car and choose depending on what fish I want to target. |
