The more you dive the better you will get at knowing what conditions will work in different areas. Mostly you want an offshore wind and not much rain for the bay. So Mt Martha likes a wind with some east in it. There are exceptions to this rule like Black Rock, which often has better vis with a small amount of south chop on the water. I think this may be due to clearer water from south in the bay being moved up to push dirty Yarra water away from shore? Also Rye to Portsea and open beaches don't seem to be effected by rain as much. This may be due to more water movement in these areas. I use internet sites like seabreeze, swellnet, willyweather, port of melbourne wavedata, weatherzone charts and bureau of meteorology(BOM), but none of these are 100% as the weather is always changing. They are more of a guide.
Hope this helps, Tim
