Try using Aqua Ear (or similar products) after each dive - its basically just isopropyl alcohol, which dries out the ear completely when used and kills off any nasties.

My wife used to get bad ear infections after diving - started using this and it cleared right up.

Yeah cheers guys.

Think I'm still suffering one tough virus because my lymph nodes are still swollen..

I'll wait till I'm 100% healthy and if it still persist I'll go see a specialised ear doc I reckon!

cheers

Docs Pro Plugs are good. I have used them. you need to get the clear ones with a little hole in them to help equalize the space between the eardrum and plug. proper fit is essential.
Its important not to dive when you have a head cold. the mucus blocks your tubes and you can't equalize propperly or you get a revers block WORSE! the air is trying to escape as it expands on you assent and FUCKING HURTS!
don't dive with a head cold (need ears to listen to music 8) )

I always thought I must've had a little tear in there somewhere, surely it doesn't always hurt everyone that much does it?

It can really hurt if you've got some abrasion or inflammation in the ear or have an ear infection. I mostly used it in tropical waters and after swimming pool sessions. It's stung me a few times. Hurts like f#ck!

so it ended up that I had an ear infection plus a separate virus..

The ear infection was the cause of my swollen lymph nodes which was interesting and also cause my saw jaw..

Really good read from this link below any one who is planning a lot of dives in a short period.

This thread has been pretty helpful, thanks.
A while ago my ears were feeling funny after a dive and I (stupidly) decided to dive the next day and ended up with something ferociously wrong with my ears. It was like they were stuffed full of cotton wool, they were ringing badly and i could feel my pulse pounding through my ears like a sledge hammer. Horrible stuff.
The doctor said it was someting inside, as in not something in my ear but behind the eardrum, like a swelling due to the infection.

Went to the doctor, got antibiotics, got worse. Went back, got different antibiotics and it cleared up after another 7 days or so.... next time i got in the water, maybe two weeks later, I was only in for an hour and diving 3m at most. By the time I got home I had the same thing, it kicked in quick!! Major head pounding, feeling like ears are full of cotton wool, jaw pain so bad I could barely eat... Fkn horrible !!

Another trip to the doctor, more antibiotics, but it still lasted about 8 or 9 days. I have been too scared to get back in the water until 2 days ago. Had a good dive for a few hours but the next day I could feel a slight bit of something in my ears again and I reckon if i hit the water before that goes away I'll get another relentless ear pounding for over a week.

Anyway, Im going to try the rinsing of my wetsuit with antibacterial solution like canesten or dettol, putting drops in each ear for 5 mins before and after each dive.
If this doesnt help then I'm definetly off to a specialist.

I read the thing about punching a hole in the hood too. I'm unsure how this would help. Has anyone done it and has it helped? Wont it just fk up my wetsuit?

Cheers guys,
Cam

Seriously man, if you haven't been to a specialist yet you're asking for it. Get your doctor to book you in with Dr William Hurst in Frankston. He's a specialist. I've probably been to him 6 times now and finally my ears are right.

my doc said it was the bacterial infection and warm water in my hood.

Since taking the advice of these guys of washing my suit out with Dettol (half a cup), drying it inside out first, gulping cold water into my suit every now and then, putting my botties under my suit to let water flow out and using aqua ear, I haven't had one ear or rash issue!

good luck

I'm testing DOCs Pro Plugs at the moment. I ordered in a few different sizes. I have worked out what size I need now so if anybody would like to buy a pair off me let me know. $20
