does anyone know if the ruins of prince's wharf, port melbourne are off limits?

there is of course the 30m from any jetty rule, but are ruins of a wharf/jetty still defined as a jetty? went for a run past it yesterday and the ruins at prince's wharf look like they must must go out a good 200m and look like they could be worth sneaking through. it appears completely safe with no boats or activity anywhere near the ruins nor the approach you would swim to the ruins

cheers

Probably best to call DEPI and ask fisheries for the exact definition of the word 'jetty' as its used in the fisheries guide, and if it constitutes 'active', or simply the structure itself.

I'm under the impression that it *does* need to be an active jetty in order for that rule to apply, and that dilapidated ruins don't count, but I've never done it before so I've never really had to know.

When you find out. Post the answer here, there are some other places in the bay I have had my eye on but figured they are out of bounds. Cheers.

wouldn't worry to much about it, i'd spear it until you were told otherwise by a fish pig. If they have a go at you just say that you thought the rule wouldn't apply to a jetty in ruins

I ride my bike down there often and see people fishing every time I've been there and thought it would be a great place to hunt bream and snapper due to the fact that mussels like pylons and snapper like mussels. But there are clearly marked signs that read - no swimming. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you couldn't spearfish within 30m of a man-made structure which would rule it out and why I haven't given it a crack. Let us know when you find out a definitive ruling. But I reckon it would be off limits unfortunately.

They had a floating boom around it that you weren't allowed inside with signs saying no boating and no swimming. I got to dive in there a couple of years ago bringing up a yacht that hit one of the broken pylons. Not much life other than sea stars. I dropped a heap of burley about 20m from where we were working and nothing came in on it.

greg - i didn't see a floating boom this time, nor any no swimming signs - perhaps they just run it over summer months

Here's a couple of pics I took on my phone from 2 summers ago. I'm pretty sure there are no swimming signs on the pier. That doesn't mean you can't swim from shore.

That looks way different to when I was there. They were still pulling the deck off then.

Considering fisheries are being slack arses!!!
This is the definition of a pier:-
A structure leading out from the shore into a body of water, in particular.
A platform supported on pillars or girders, used as a landing stage for boats.

Therefore this is not a pier!
