Anyone get this. I get it most dives when I'm in the water for over 4 hours. Thought it was sea sickness until somebody(you know who you are) explained what the problem might be. Reading on the net about possible solutions and they range from antacid tablets to sea sick tablets to a range of other meds. Watching what you eat 24hours before a dive is also talked about which seems like the best option to me.

Any thoughts?

Most likely have something to do with what you are before hand

I try and avoid milk and milky things (eg. cereal w/ milk, cappuccinos, lattes, etc) in the hours leading up to a dive. Found that this gives me reflux during a dive (same goes for pretty much any physical activity).

At the same time I try and make sure my stomach has something in it, as I also find that, particularly for longer duration dives, an empty stomach causes me issues too. Either starchy or carb heavy things like bread, potato chips, etc. work for me (though not really sound nutritional advice mind you), or greasy protein rich foods (bacon... mmm) work for me.

My fiancee gets pretty sea sick, and has found in the past that half a phenergan tablet taken about 1 - 2 hours before the dive or boat trip keeps her in check.

This is something I get after a few hours as well sometimes, definitely happens more when I'm knackered at the end of a long dive. Taking an antacid helps a lot, I use Tums and the Mg in them helps prevent cramps as well, double bonus.
For me food that stays in your stomach is the worst, I only eat fruit before a dive now and that seems to help as well, protein rich foods and greasy food are the worst so no pies or potato cakes.
I don't know if the cause is swallowing tiny amounts of sea water or from spending too much time upside down but I reckon they are the main suspects.

Cheers, might keep the antacid tablets handy and see how that goes.

Get a snorkel with a drain valve and breathe/swallow less saltwater/mist/dribbles/bits.

Sometimes age, weight and genetics can work against you. The muscle around the valve connecting to the stomach can become weaker, especially if you've punished your stomach with spicy food, booze, stress and overeating. So I take a medication similar to somac called nexium. Available with prescription and it works a treat. Basically, it tones down acid production. Syrup medicines like Gaviscon try and form a barrier but with too much excursion, being upside down and drinking sports drinks nullifies its effect I find. So, I swear by the nexium and I'm a fat oldish unfit boozey crankey stress head :P

Funny this topic has come up as I was only having a whinge the other week about it with Shane, he said that he used to get it and had tried all the easily available anti acid products. His advice was to go to my GP as he did and get a prescription product. I have been putting up with it for years, so I will be giving my GP a visit and I'm looking forward to some reflux free dives!!

I suffer it pretty bad too. Doesn't seem to matter to much what I eat, after a few hours of being head down in the the water I get bad reflux. Once it was so bad it caused me to have a spew on the surface, not a pleasant experience but made a good burly trail. I have tried some over the counter ant acids but I reckon I'll try some prescription ones mentioned.

Anyone who thinks these conditions or any other problems will be solved by healthy eating, natural or alternative medicines must be a pagan!

Orders via PM please

Yeah, I tried all the over the counter meds because the reflux was shocking on a coral sea trip - 9 days at sea in rough seas at times, getting seasick and diving everyday while drinking Gatorade to stay hydrated, having a normal snorkel instead of an ocean snorkel and swallowing half the coral sea, hoicking myself into boats and loading and unloading a 4 band whopper stopper on my guts and eating fried coral trout pretty much meant I spewed every time I got back onto the tender boat. Next trip I had Nexium and no probs. I take Nexium esomeprazole 20mg. Each tablet contains: esomeprazole magnesium trihydrate 22.3mg Equivalent to: esomeprazole 20mg. I think Somac is pretty similar. I have had one of those before after a big night on the turps and it worked well but tends to make you fart. I would be aware though that the Nexium tones down stomach acid so if you eat a big steak after a dive then it will take longer to digest I've found. Anyway, good luck with it.
