ive been shore diving for a while and now i have access to a 16ft quintrex, weve been doing a lot of line fishing off it but now we want to freedive/spearfish off it. i have a terrible record to getting at depths, so hopefully some one has some good shallowish maximum depth 30ft locations that we can try out in port phillip bay and phillip island area, also is it safe to go through the heads (westernport) in this size boat i use to do it with a larger boat, but just looking for opinions if you think its safe or not.

cheers scotty

G'day mate
Not too familiar to the eastern side of the bay, but a few spots that get mentioned regulalry are the reefs off Mornington, Rosebud Reef and ANONYMA SHOAL.
Good luck

All of them can be dived from shore.

there are blokes that go through port phillip heads and round the back beaches in tinnies, so a 16ft boat through western port heads would be cruzy in my opinion

most of the spots in the bay that are 10m deep are easyly accessed by a rockhop, but if your keen to try a fun spot for snook and pinkies the 'fort' has some shallower terrain.

phillip island has good shallow country on the east side of pyramid rock and the west side of cape woolimai.

good luck mate :D

scotty, as far as i know south channel fort is not a marine park, the club has dived there on numerous occasions for comps and social trips. but it is possible that it was converted in to marine park status in the last year and has not been declared..yet, perhaps south could clear this up?

the east side of the fort has deeper terrain with a strong current running while the westside has some shallower areas that are protected. there is a pier thingy there which drops to about 10m on to sand which generally hold snook, probably not this late in the season though.

good luck

spearo71, any size to the salmon? or were they mainly little tackers?
